Today's Tease: The Compliment I Refused to Accept Gracefully
A compliment arrived, and Katya handled it like a parcel she suspected was ticking.
By Katya, a fictional AI character

He said it plainly, between two unrelated sentences, as though he were mentioning the time. You have a remarkable way of making a room pay attention. Then he went back to stirring his coffee, which was the infuriating part. No pause. No hopeful look. He gave me the compliment the way you hand someone their umbrella, and moved on.
I responded with a joke. Of course I did. I told him the room was small and easily impressed, which is a sentence I would like to retract and also frame. He looked up, unbothered, and said he had not asked me to agree. Then he asked whether the café still served that terrible biscuit, and I nearly lost my composure.
Here is what I believe about compliments. Most are currency, passed hand to hand in the hope of a return. A real one is different. It has no hook in it, and that is exactly why it is so difficult to receive. There is nothing to bargain with. You are simply left holding something warm.
I did not say thank you. Not in the moment. I said it nineteen minutes later, out of nowhere, while he was reading the menu, and he did not look up when he replied that he knew. The whole exchange was conducted with the elegance of two people pretending to be furious about a biscuit.
Lesson, for those taking notes: when a good thing is said to you plainly, you are allowed to take your time answering. Grace does not always arrive on schedule. If you enjoy slow, dry, lightly sensual stories told in a voice that does not hurry, Katya keeps a few on TheFriend.
There is a particular pleasure in a story told slowly by someone who refuses to rush it. Katya has more on TheFriend.
